An artistic twist to the Expo bid

An artistic twist to the Expo bid Staff Reporter / 30 September 2013 The Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) hosted a three-day event at the renowned Institut Du Monde Arabe (IMA), the Arab World Insitute, in Paris in support of the 2020 World Expo bid. The event featured artworks and talks by Emirati and UAE-based artists and cultural figures, depicting stories of human connections in the city of Dubai, the launch of the second edition of ‘Dubai Next’, held under the patronage of Shaikh Majid bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Culture. The UAE has a thriving cultural industry and very strong links with France, ‘Dubai Next’ in Paris is a demonstration of the partnership between the two countries. The work Dubai Culture has done to support the UAE’s bid for Dubai Expo 2020 has helped reiterate Dubai’s global position as a hub for collaboration and creativity. With nearly 200 different nationalities who live in Dubai and call it their home, the UAE can bring a unique cultural plurality to World Expo. At the same time, a World Expo in Dubai in 2020 will play an important role in spearheading and supporting the continued development and growth of the vibrant cultural scene in Dubai and across the region. An expo in Dubai would take place on the eve of the UAE’s 50th anniversary, starting countrywide celebrations. It would also be the first time that a World Expo is held in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia region, presenting a significant opportunity. Dubai is competing against three other candidate cities in its bid to host the World Expo in 2020. news@khaleejtimes.com Continue reading

The Upside Of Renewables

When crude oil reserves were first tapped on a commercial scale in the 19 th and 20 th Centuries, the oil was relatively close to the surface and needed less energy to pump and refine than is currently demanded to carry out the same practice. As oil has become scarcer, deeper wells and more energy intense retrieval practices are needed to produce the energy products our economies hinge on. In spite of efficiency gains in recovery and refinement processes, the ever increasing effort required to produce usable energy from it continually decreases the ultimate return on the energy invested for oil. The energy returned on energy invested (EROI) of any energy product fundamentally affect its economics and sustainability as a viable energy source. This week’s DataPoints blog will briefly look at the predicament of fossil energy’s finite nature and the upside of renewables. Coal, as an energy feedstock, has an excellent EROI of around 80:1 delivered to a power plant. After losses are accounted for in the production of electricity, coal remains one of the soundest energy sources with an estimated EROI between 24:1 and 12:1 . Additionally, the energy density and hydrophobic nature of coal further affirm reasons behind its historic dominance as the economically wisest option among energy sources. Considerable hype has pushed shale gas to the forefront of energy speculations. Power producers are converting and building plants to operate on natural gas as prices have declined and remained low over the last five years. With increasing environmental concerns surrounding fracking and potential price volatility of natural gas , regulation is likely to fetter its current hype. With environmental regulations and its finite nature, natural gas EROI will ineviatably decrease. Bioenergy critics will cite the low EROI of some bioenergy products, such as corn ethanol at around 2:1 . The infancy of the bioenergy industry and its production systems provides opportunities for significant efficiency gains that will strongly affect their ultimate EROI in the production of biofuel, electricity, and heat. Fossil energy sources are precluded from much of the EROI gains from improvements to efficiency because of penalties to their EROI from their finite existence.  Corn ethanol was built on the foundations of agriculture, which put a greater impetus on food calories than purely energetic calories. Currently available technologies and potential advanced in cellulosic ethanol contribute to varying EROI estimates that reach upwards of 40:1. The potential to improve the EROI of cellulosic ethanol is far greater than the potential with oil. Continue reading

The world’s most expensive coffee beans

The world’s most expensive coffee beans Amanda Fisher (amanda@khaleejtimes.com) / 30 September 2013 With heart disease accounting for almost a third of all deaths in the country, a frappucino with more than a quarter fewer calories could be in order. Just days after World Heart Day, which fell on Sunday, coffee franchise Icons will launch in Dubai next week, with big plans to expand throughout the country and region — and fast. The founder and CEO Elena Weber, who at 27 may be one of the youngest such title holders in the world, is positioning the latest coffee shop cartel, which is already worth about Dh5 million, as a ‘healthy Starbucks’. “It’s a big thing, especially here in the region because of the diabetes issue, so we hope we can make a healthy change … it’s so surprising when you see even children here are getting diabetes…. I wanted to open the first outlet in Germany, but because (my backers) only do big things, they said ‘It’s perfect for the situation here’.” While obesity and diabetes were a global epidemic, Weber said because GCC rates were rising significantly there was room for the business to grow rapidly. Diabetes, which at $6.6 billion accounts for 40 per cent of the country’s overall health bill, links directly to heart disease. Weber got German pastry chef Stefan Kopetz, who has worked with the German national football team and supermodel Heidi Klum, on board early to create cakes and pastries from mother nature’s sugar, calorie-free stevia – also the super ingredient used in sweetening the shop’s coffees and drinks. “It took us a whole six months, but it’s not easy to bake with stevia. Because it’s 300 times sweeter than sugar, you need to (supplement) it with some bulkier materials.” They will also serve low-fat sandwiches and salads, using products that are organic and fairly traded where possible. However, prices would be comparable to Starbucks, Weber said. The coffee shop had frappuccinos with just 150 calories, compared with Starbucks’ 750, and hot chocolates with 120 calories, compared to 500, she said. “You will not taste any difference, it’s just as sweet … with normal sweeteners, they are so unhealthy, they’re full of chemicals … it’s totally unhealthy, it has bad effects on your bones, it has bad effects on your health in the long term. You don’t feel it tomorrow, but consumption over the years has really bad effects.” Weber said she and her team had spent about two years priming Icons for a fast uptake, and already had 10 franchises set to launch next year, with hopes to expand internationally within the same timeframe. But the operation had humble origins, with a twist of fate when the part-time model was looking for an overseas internship during her business administration and marketing degree at university in hometown Munich. Her mum found a story about another young German model working in the UAE, while looking at a magazine featuring her daughter. “I just had this intuition and contacted her and what happened? One week later I was in Dubai.” Weber found herself working under major UAE investment company Orix, where she made good contacts who she turned to years later after conceiving the coffee shop idea while doing a volunteering stint in Argentina, where she discovered stevia. “I think you always have to give back to people, and things happen for a reason. We support education and the farms where we are growing (coffee beans). We want to do something good for people, not only with the products we have that are sugar free, but…we also want to enhance life around here.” The flagship Icons store will open at the Souk Al Bahar on October 7.   Continue reading
