Bundles of Eid joy arrive

Bundles of Eid joy arrive Olivia Olarte-Ulherr / 9 August 2013 Blessings came in abundance for many couples on Thursday with the arrival of their tiny bundles of joy exactly on the first day of Eid Al Fitr at the Corniche Hospital. First to arrive at 13 minutes after midnight was baby boy Alby Abraham to proud mum Sosamma Anu. At 3.4kg, Alby, whose name means “God is great” in Malayalam, is a welcome gift for the family. “He is my first boy,” said Sosamma who already have two older daughters. “I just believe God is great. My husband’s father passed away at the start of Ramadan this year and this one came at the end of Ramadan. My husband was crying, he said ‘my father has gone and he came back again though this baby’,” she said. Baby girl Oshba Sultan Saif Al Qubaisi was due to be born on August 5 but decided to bide her time for the most opportune day.     Newborn babies Syed Hussain, oshba Sultan and  Ibrahim Hasan. -Supplied photos  “I am surprised. In fact, the entire family is ecstatic with Oshba’s arrival. “I am very happy. This is second Eid for me because we have Eid then, we got the baby this Eid, which is very nice. She is also my first girl. From the beginning, my husband has always wanted a girl; he loves to have a girl too much. This is a dream come true, Alhamdulilla,” Amena said happily of her 3.7kg bundle. Baby girl Madeea Mansoor, meanwhile, couldn’t wait to come out. “She was two weeks early… immediately she wants to come,” said mum Mariam Al Dhaheri, pleased that the Emirati girl chose to come out on the first day of Eid at 5.36am. “Alhamdulilla, it is very nice,” Mariam said of her second baby girl who weighs 3kg. According to assistant director of nursing at the hospital Jocelyn Christodoulides, the first day of Eid was a busy day with already 16 deliveries by 2pm. “We have four more in labour. Six rescued from burning building

Six rescued from burning building Nivriti Butalia / 4 August 2013 Six construction workers were rescued when the under-construction building they were working on caught fire, stranding hundreds of commuters as Dubai Metro services halted for several hours.   Smoke billows from the building under construction that caught fire in Downtown Dubai on shaikh Zayed road on saturday. — KT photo by Rahul Gajjar The all-male crew were working on the sixth floor of the building, located 200 metres away from The Dubai Mall metro station, early on Saturday morning, when the fire was detected. The commanding fire rescue officer said his men reached the location of the fire in a record four minutes, from the nearby Al Manara station. “We got the call at 5.54am and we were at the site at 5.58.” He said the six men were trapped in the building, on the same floor as the fire and blackened windows with smoke coming out of them were visible to the onlookers down below. “We faced obstacles getting to (the men), as the space was being used as a warehouse, so we had crates and boxes in our way, but we managed to rescue all six.” He confirmed no one was injured in the blaze. Meanwhile, Dubai Metro services between the Jafiliya and the Business Bay metro stations were interrupted for two hours due to the fire which broke out near the Burj Khalifa. The building is located right opposite a car showroom and a RAKBANK outlet. The Roads and Transport Authority rail operation director Ramadan Abdullah, who was at the site of the fire by 7am said this might be the first time Dubai Metro services were interrupted due to a fire. The extinguishing operation continued for about three hours and by 9am the situation was well under control with the fire put out. The metro services resumed by 10am. Due to the interruption in the metro services the usually desolate Business Bay metro station area was clogged with people and metro replacement buses. A flood of cabs from all five Dubai cab companies had been diverted to the area for people to carry on with their respective commutes.  – news@khaleejtimes.com   Continue reading →

Mursi supporters signals flexibility in talks

Mursi supporters signals flexibility in talks (Reuters) / 4 August 2013 Allies of deposed Egyptian President Mohammed Mursi told mediators on Saturday they respected the popular will expressed in mass protests that led to his downfall, suggesting they might be backing away from a demand he be reinstated. Tarek El-Malt, spokesman for the pro-Mursi delegation that met envoys from the United States and the European Union, said his camp sought a resolution to Egypt’s crisis based on the constitution that was suspended after he was deposed. Speaking to Reuters by telephone, Malt said Mursi’s allies told the envoys they wanted the constitution restored and said it held “more than one solution” to the crisis. He added that General Abdel Fattah Al Sisi, the army chief who overthrew Mursi, must not be part of a political deal without Mursi. Asked whether the delegation had told the envoys that Mursi must be reinstated, Malt said that would be worked out in the details, notably not reiterating the demand for his return. “This is part of the political initiatives,” he said. “We did not get into the details of the political initiatives”. He said if those who opposed Mursi continued to insist that he should not be part of the “political equation”, then “the steadfastness and sit-ins of the millions in the streets for five weeks requires that Sisi must also not be in the political equation.” A member of the Muslim Brotherhood-allied Wasat Party, Malt is the appointed spokesman of the delegation that met with US Deputy Secretary of State William Burns, US Ambassador Anne Patterson and European Union special envoy Bernardino Leon. The delegation also includes top members of the Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party (FJP). Later, senior Brotherhood politician Essam El Erian said restoring the 2012 constitution meant Mursi would see out his term. However, diplomats say the Brotherhood understands Mursi, detained at a secret location, will not return as president but they want a face-saving legal formula for him to step down. “Those empowered to speak for the FJP understand that Mursi is not coming back. But they are maintaining that as a negotiating position,” a Western diplomat said. Another diplomat involved in the talks said pro-Mursi alliance had shown flexibility in Saturday’s meeting. Relaying the messages delivered to the envoys, Malt said: “I respect and hold in regard the demands of the masses that went out on June 30, but I will not build on the military coup.” He added that the demands of the Mursi supporters must also be respected. Mursi supporters still protesting in Cairo want the constitution and Mursi reinstated. “We have the readiness and flexibility to accept political solutions to get out of this crisis as long as they are based on constitutional legitimacy, by which we mean the return and reactivation of the 2012 constitution,” Malt said. He added that political solutions must be hammered out with the National Salvation Front – the loose coalition of parties that backed Mursi’s overthrow and which includes interim Vice-President Mohamed ElBaradei. “We (will) sit together and we will assess proposed political initiatives and reach solutions that respect all popular desires. But the army will not have a role in political solutions,” he said. “The army must remain neutral and not interfere in political life,” he added. Malt said a period of calm was needed to build confidence among all parties. He said this would include a renunciation of violence, the release of what he called political detainees and allowing Islamist television stations to reopen. The army-backed government says the Brotherhood has incited violence, accusing it of engaging in terrorism. Malt said the delegation had underscored the pro-Mursi camp’s commitment to peaceful protests.   Continue reading →
