Dubai Courts launches ‘Twitter Visit’ initiative Staff Reporter / 30 August 2013 The Dubai Courts’ 4,000 Twitter followers and other interested individuals will now have the chance to take part in an arranged visit to the courts’ premises and have a closer look at the way the judicial system works. According to ‘Twitter Visit’, an initiative which was launched by Dubai Courts General Manager Dr Saeed bin Hazeem, a monthly visit will be arranged for the members of the public who wish to get familiar with the judicial system in operation within the courts, and procedures and services rendered to the litigants. Dr Bin Hazeem stressed that the courts department was keen to spread its vision and mission among customers and society in general and that it was important to raise the public’s awareness about its services and procedures. “The courts plays an important and prominent role in the community, and we must enlighten the community members about this judicial role. The main purpose of the Dubai Courts is to boost confidence in the judicial system both locally and internationally. “This is achieved through the spreading of justice in society, precision and speed in the settlement and adjudication of claims, and enforcement of judicial judgments, decisions and orders, as well as documentation of contracts and other edited materials. This goal can be achieved by relying on qualified national cadres and modern and sophisticated systems, procedures and techniques.” The programme is aimed at all those who have tweeted Dubai Courts through its Twitter site which currently receives around 4,000 followers in total. According to the Public Communication and Social Media Office at the Dubai Courts, to take part in the Twitter Visit, one should contact them and reserve a seat. The programme will include a tour inside the courts’ premises and introduction about the various departments, divisions and services provided to litigants. In addition, a meeting with a judge from Dubai Courts will be included, in order to familiarise the visitors with his profession, its secrets and inside information, and the challenges he faces in his work as a judge. The various scenes will show what it takes to keep Dubai International safe, secure and on schedule. From the Control Tower and Customs interrogations to angry customers, cargo headaches and new construction, nothing is left unturned in the series. It includes all three massive terminals, including Terminal 3, the biggest airport terminal building by floor space — measuring 359 football pitches in size. With unprecedented access to all facets of this mega facility, the series follows some of the 60,000 staff working hard to keep everything in place with more than 344,000 flights, 57 million passengers and two million tonnes of cargo flying in and out each year, ‘Ultimate Airport Dubai’ provides viewers with an all-access ticket to the various divisions of this expanding airport, which is poised to become the world’s busiest airport for international travel one day. Numbers say it all Reports showed that Dubai International’s passenger traffic rose 6.1 per cent in July, reaching 5,310,361 compared to 5,006,155 during the same month last year. The year to date traffic is up 15.3 per cent to 37,972,464 compared to 32,937,794 during the first seven months of 2012. Aircraft movements totalled 28,462 during July, an increase of 2.3 per cent from the 27,829 recorded during the same period last year. Passengers per aircraft movement in July was at 201. Dubai Airports, operator of Dubai International, said that overall passenger numbers, Western Europe traffic took over as the top market thanks to robust growth (+13.4 per cent) during the month. The Indian subcontinent, which fell to second spot, continued to show positive growth (+6.1 per cent) due to the expansion of several Indian carriers including Indigo, Spice Jet and Air India Express. Attacks kill at least 74 in Iraq, many more hurt (AP) / 29 August 2013 A coordinated wave of bombings tore through Shia areas in and around the Iraqi capital early on Wednesday, part of a wave of bloodshed that killed at least 74 people and wounded many more, officials said. The blasts, which came in quick succession, mainly targeted residents out shopping and on their way to work. In addition to the bombings, the death toll included seven family members killed when gunmen raided their home and shot them as they slept. Insurgents deployed explosives-laden cars, suicide bombers and other bombs and targeted parking lots, outdoor markets and restaurants in predominantly Shia neighbourhoods of Baghdad, according to officials. A military convoy was also hit south of the capital. Security forces sealed off the bomb scenes as ambulances raced to pick up the wounded. The twisted wreckage of cars littered the pavement while cleaners and shop owners brushed away the debris. At one restaurant, the floor was stained with blood, and dishes were scattered on plastic tables. The northern neighbourhood of Kazimiyah, home to a prominent, gold-domed Shia shrine, was the worst hit. Two bombs went off in a parking lot, followed by a suicide car bomber who struck onlookers who had gathered at the scene. Police said 10 people were killed and 27 wounded in that attack. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the day’s attacks, but they bore the hallmarks of the Iraqi branch of Al Qaeda. The Shia family shot dead at home were found in the largely Sunni town of Latifiyah, about 30km south of Baghdad. Three children, aged eight to 12, were killed along with their parents and two uncles in that attack, according to police. Authorities said they had previously fled the town after being threatened, and returned only three weeks ago. Many of the day’s blasts targeted morning shoppers. Among them was a parked car bomb that detonated in a commercial area in the northern Shaab neighbourhood of Baghdad, killing nine and wounding 25. More parked car bombs went off in outdoor markets in the sprawling slum of Sadr City, where five were killed and 20 were wounded. Similar attacks hit the northeastern neighbourhood of Shula, killing three and wounding nine; the southeastern Jisr Diyala in an outdoor market, killing eight and wounding 22; and the eastern New Baghdad area, killing three and wounding 12. Blasts also hit the neighbourhoods of Bayaa, Jamila, Hurriyah and Saydiyah, claiming a total of 12 lives. In Mahmoudiyah, about 30km south of Baghdad, a suicide bomber blew himself up outside a restaurant, killing five and wounding 25. And in Madain, about 25km southeast of Baghdad, a roadside bomb struck a passing military patrol, killing four soldiers and wounding six others.
