Mursi supporters signals flexibility in talks

Mursi supporters signals flexibility in talks (Reuters) / 4 August 2013 Allies of deposed Egyptian President Mohammed Mursi told mediators on Saturday they respected the popular will expressed in mass protests that led to his downfall, suggesting they might be backing away from a demand he be reinstated. Tarek El-Malt, spokesman for the pro-Mursi delegation that met envoys from the United States and the European Union, said his camp sought a resolution to Egypt’s crisis based on the constitution that was suspended after he was deposed. Speaking to Reuters by telephone, Malt said Mursi’s allies told the envoys they wanted the constitution restored and said it held “more than one solution” to the crisis. He added that General Abdel Fattah Al Sisi, the army chief who overthrew Mursi, must not be part of a political deal without Mursi. Asked whether the delegation had told the envoys that Mursi must be reinstated, Malt said that would be worked out in the details, notably not reiterating the demand for his return. “This is part of the political initiatives,” he said. “We did not get into the details of the political initiatives”. He said if those who opposed Mursi continued to insist that he should not be part of the “political equation”, then “the steadfastness and sit-ins of the millions in the streets for five weeks requires that Sisi must also not be in the political equation.” A member of the Muslim Brotherhood-allied Wasat Party, Malt is the appointed spokesman of the delegation that met with US Deputy Secretary of State William Burns, US Ambassador Anne Patterson and European Union special envoy Bernardino Leon. The delegation also includes top members of the Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party (FJP). Later, senior Brotherhood politician Essam El Erian said restoring the 2012 constitution meant Mursi would see out his term. However, diplomats say the Brotherhood understands Mursi, detained at a secret location, will not return as president but they want a face-saving legal formula for him to step down. “Those empowered to speak for the FJP understand that Mursi is not coming back. But they are maintaining that as a negotiating position,” a Western diplomat said. Another diplomat involved in the talks said pro-Mursi alliance had shown flexibility in Saturday’s meeting. Relaying the messages delivered to the envoys, Malt said: “I respect and hold in regard the demands of the masses that went out on June 30, but I will not build on the military coup.” He added that the demands of the Mursi supporters must also be respected. Mursi supporters still protesting in Cairo want the constitution and Mursi reinstated. “We have the readiness and flexibility to accept political solutions to get out of this crisis as long as they are based on constitutional legitimacy, by which we mean the return and reactivation of the 2012 constitution,” Malt said. He added that political solutions must be hammered out with the National Salvation Front – the loose coalition of parties that backed Mursi’s overthrow and which includes interim Vice-President Mohamed ElBaradei. “We (will) sit together and we will assess proposed political initiatives and reach solutions that respect all popular desires. But the army will not have a role in political solutions,” he said. “The army must remain neutral and not interfere in political life,” he added. Malt said a period of calm was needed to build confidence among all parties. He said this would include a renunciation of violence, the release of what he called political detainees and allowing Islamist television stations to reopen. The army-backed government says the Brotherhood has incited violence, accusing it of engaging in terrorism. Malt said the delegation had underscored the pro-Mursi camp’s commitment to peaceful protests.   Continue reading →

16m gallons pumped out after pipe burst in Gardens

16m gallons pumped out after pipe burst in Gardens Staff Reporter (sajila@khaleejtimes.com) / 24 July 2013 Sixteen million gallons of water was pumped out of the areas behind the Ibn Battuta Mall where a main Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) pipeline burst on Thursday night causing one of the worst flooding in the city. The Dubai Municipality has revealed it has cleared this much water after last weekend’s chaos that led to massive flooding on the roads in the area with submerged cars, electric short circuiting and traffic jams. It was the civic body that took the lead in salvaging the flooded residential communities around the Ibn Battuta Mall by pumping out the water. The chief of the emergency team of the municipality, who termed the incident “one of the most challenging crises that Dubai has witnessed” allayed fears of any public health issues due to the floods. Though an investigation into the incident is still on, Dewa has not yet given out details of how it happened and the amount of water lost. However, the Dubai Municipality said on Tuesday, a Sewerage and Irrigation Network Department team toiled for 15 hours and drained about 75,000 cubic metres of water – equivalent to 16 million gallons. Department director Hassan Makki, who led the activities to drain out the flood water from the inundated area and to reinstate the road transportation stalled during the accident, said in a media statement, that immediate action with emergency plans helped reducing the possible danger the residents in Gardens would have been exposed to  following the floods. “It was late night on Thursday when we received the call from the police department (about the) pipe burst and the flood follow(ing) it, which blocked roads and left residents stranded. Without any delay, we deployed our action team to carry out operations according to the emergency plan we follow to tackle such circumstances.” He said the team started work at 1am on Friday, with eight tankers and pump sets while staff worked 15 hours continuously. Eight tankers having the loading capacity of 5,000 gallon removed 3,211 loads of water during this emergency action. Director of Public Health and Safety Department Redha Hassan Salman, who also heads the Corporate Emergency and Crisis Committee, said most of the flooded areas had been cleared. There would be no public health issues as a result of the floods with the water pumped out and discharged as storm water, he said. The official said the emergency and crisis plan and coordination between various government departments in Dubai was ready to tackle any such situation. “In such situations, actions should be well-coordinated and organised in order to make it fast and effective. This is what is meant by the emergency and crisis plan and coordination between Dubai government bodies headed by the police department.”   Continue reading →

Norwegian woman, jailed for illicit sex, granted pardon

Norwegian woman, jailed for illicit sex, granted pardon Marie Nammour / 22 July 2013 A prosecution source has confirmed that the Norwegian woman, who was jailed for having illicit sex and giving false report to the authorities about being raped, has been granted pardon. “Her case has reached authorities beyond the Public Prosecution including the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” the source told Khaleej Times. Marte Deborah Dalelv, in a statement to a Press agency said that she was given back her passport by the Attorney-General’s office and the case was dropped against her which made her free to leave the UAE. The 42-year-old woman, who works as an interior design executive, has been sentenced by the Court of Misdemeanours to 16 months in jail, followed by deportation, for falsely reporting a rape, having sex-out-of the wedlock and consuming alcohol. Her lawyer has already appealed the sentencing and a hearing was scheduled for September 5. She alleged to the police and prosecutors that her Sudanese boss raped her in his hotel room in the Safa area in Bur Dubai in March, taking advantage that she was under the influence of alcohol. The man was sentenced to 13 months in jail and deportation. She had been on a business trip with him when the incident happened. Marte’s case has created media frenzy in the west after she told her story to the Press recounting her ordeal and shock over being held in custody for reporting a rape. She claimed that during the interrogation, she changed her testimony claiming to the investigators that she had consensual sex in a desperate bid to get a reduced sentence. mary@khaleejtimes.com Continue reading →
