India ‘milestone’ as it launches own aircraft carrier

India ‘milestone’ as it launches own aircraft carrier (AFP) / 12 August 2013 India launched its first indigenously-built aircraft carrier on Monday, a landmark moment in the $5 billion project that seeks to project the country’s power and check the rising influence of China. When the INS Vikrant comes into full service in 2018, India will become the fifth nation to have designed and built its own aircraft carrier, pushing ahead of China to join an elite club that includes Britain, France, Russia and the United States. “It’s a remarkable milestone,” Defence Minister A.K. Antony said as he stood in front of the giant grey hull of the ship at a ceremony in the southern city of Kochi. “It marks just a first step in a long journey but at the same time an important one.” The ship, which will be fitted with weaponry and machinery and then tested over the next four years, is a major advance for a country competing for influence in Asia, analysts say. “It is going to be deployed in the Indian Ocean region where the world’s commercial and economic interests coalesce. India’s capability is very much with China in mind,” Rahul Bedi, a defence expert with IHS Jane’s Defence Weekly, told AFP. On Saturday, India announced its first indigenously-built nuclear submarine was ready for sea trials, a key step before it becomes fully operational. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh called it a “giant stride” for the nation. “All these are power projection platforms, to project India’s power as an extension of its diplomacy,” Bedi added. New Delhi is spending tens of billions of dollars upgrading its mainly Soviet-era military hardware to bolster its defences. Successes in its long-range missile and naval programmes have been tempered by expensive failures in developing its own aircraft and other land-based weaponry, leaving the country highly dependent on imports. INS Vikrant is two years behind schedule after problems in sourcing specialised steel from Russia, delays with crucial equipment and even a road accident in which vital diesel generators were damaged. Overall, India lags far behind China in defence capabilities, analysts say, making the success in beating its regional rival in the race to develop a domestically-produced aircraft carrier significant. China’s first carrier, the Liaoning, which was purchased from the Ukraine, went into service last September. Beijing is reportedly planning to construct or acquire a bigger ship in the future. Jane’s claimed earlier this month that it has seen evidence that China might be building its first carrier in a shipbuilding facility near Shanghai. India already has one aircraft carrier in operation — a 60-year-old British vessel acquired by India in 1987 and renamed INS Viraat — but it will be phased out in the coming years. India’s ally Russia is also set to hand over a third aircraft carrier — INS Vikramaditya — later this year after a bitter row over the refurbished Soviet-era warship caused by rising costs and delays. The INS Vikrant, which means “courageous” or “bold” in Hindi, is a 40,000-tonne vessel which will carry Russian-built MiG-29 fighter jets and other light aircraft. While its hull, design and some of its machinery is domestically made, most of its weaponry will be imported as well as its propulsion system, which was sourced from GE in the United States. “Its primary role will only be to defend our naval fleet and it will not be used for ground attacks,” retired rear admiral K. Raja Menon told AFP. “It’s a defence carrier so it will attack platforms that are coming to attack our (naval) fleet …without air defence our fleet just cannot survive,” Menon said. C. Uday Bhaskar, a retired naval officer and former director of the National Maritime Foundation in New Delhi, said the ship would “enhance India’s credibility” — but it “would not alter the balance of power with China”. “China’s nuclear expertise and ship-building capabilities are of a higher order,” he told AFP. The Indian navy is currently working on 39 ships and has begun planning to make another two aircraft carriers, Bedi said.   Continue reading →

Prayers, hugs and lively outings mark Eid Al Fitr

Prayers, hugs and lively outings mark Eid Al Fitr Olivia Olarte-Ulherr and
Nivriti Butalia / 9 August 2013 New clothes, henna on the palms of girls, good wishes exchanged all around, and a scrumptious feast with family and friends. Eid Al Fitr started early for the faithful who went out before 6am on Thursday for the prayer at Shaikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi and their local mosques across the UAE. Apart from those going for prayer, the roads were clear in the morning. But by 9am, families started piling in their cars and heading out for Al Ain and Dubai to celebrate this holy occasion with relatives and friends. Mall of the Emirates in Dubai was packed, with stores such as The Body Shop and Bath And Body Works offering Eid greetings. As crowded though as the malls were, not everyone was making rounds of shops. Take Younous Ali from Pakistan, who said in Abu Dhabi, “Last year, our parents came to spend Eid with us. It’s our turn this year to go to their house in Al Ain. We have to leave early to avoid the rush later and also to help with the preparation.” In Al Falah City in the Capital, Emirati houses woke up early to prepare their homes for their guests in the evening. In the kitchen, Umm Abdulla was already hard at work preparing some traditional Arabic sweets assisted by her two elder daughters. “My parents, sisters, brothers and their families are coming tonight. Some of them are travelling all the way from Ras Al Khaimah and Dubai to come to my house so I am preparing a special meal for us. We will have ouzi (roasted lamb) and camel salona (camel in tomato sauce with vegetable and local spices) for tonight,” Umm Abdulla said. For Tareq and his family in Abu Dhabi, Eid celebration this year will be different. “My daughters are keen to see Scooby-Doo musical and I promised to take them to the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre to see the show in the afternoon,” the Syrian national said. “I read that temperature will still be over 40 degrees Celsius today, it’s still too hot to go outdoors even in the evening so we’re not having our usual barbecue at the park. I also don’t want my wife to labour in the kitchen, so I’m taking them out to dinner in one of the Saadiyat Hotel’s restaurant,” Tareq shared. However, a few brave ones were undeterred by the soaring mercury, seeking shelter from the palm trees as they gather in groups at green patches across the city, taking pictures to commemorate this happy occasion. Others, meanwhile, sought refuge at the city malls, walking idly about, watching as shoppers rush for their last-minute purchases. By late afternoon, men and women in their best Eid clothes started arriving at the Abu Dhabi Corniche, carrying barbecue grills, pots and mats. “I am hoping to see fireworks tonight. This is my first Eid here and people said there are usually fireworks here and this is the best place to watch for them,” said Anil V. K. from India. Among the many commercial promotions on offer this Eid weekend, Emaar Retail LLC has advertised 24-hour movie screenings and activities at Dubai Ice Rink, for tourists and residents. KidZania®, the award-winning edutainment centre, is celebrating Eid Al Fitr till August 17, with a host of events including a fashion show, where the little ones can dress to impress to vie for a basket of goodies; an Eid Tent, featuring henna designers, and handicraft workshops, where children can create gifts such as jewellery, perfumes, and decorative knick-knacks, for their loved ones. The theatre in KidZania® will also showcase ‘Eid Screenings,’ starring Mansour, the animated local character. Sharjah’s Al Majaz Waterfront was another spot where families and visitors jammed up for postcard photos, rides and games for children and a quiet and leisurely evening.— news@khaleejtimes. com Continue reading →

First to arrive at 13 minutes after midnight was baby boy Alby Abraham to proud mum Sosamma Anu. At 3.4kg, Alby, whose name means “God is great” in Malayalam, is a welcome gift for the family. “He is my first boy,” said Sosamma who already have two older daughters. “I just believe God is great. My husband’s father passed away at the start of Ramadan this year and this one came at the end of Ramadan. My husband was crying, he said ‘my father has gone and he came back again though this baby’,” she said. She is also my first girl. From the beginning, my husband has always wanted a girl; he loves to have a girl too much. This is a dream come true, Alhamdulilla,” Amena said happily of her 3.7kg bundle. Baby girl Madeea Mansoor, meanwhile, couldn’t wait to come out. “She was two weeks early… immediately she wants to come,” said mum Mariam Al Dhaheri, pleased that the Emirati girl chose to come out on the first day of Eid at 5.36am. “Alhamdulilla, it is very nice,” Mariam said of her second baby girl who weighs 3kg. According to assistant director of nursing at the hospital Jocelyn Christodoulides, the first day of Eid was a busy day with already 16 deliveries by 2pm. “We have four more in labour.
