Learn always and take Dubai with you, students told
Learn always and take Dubai with you, students told Sarah Young / 1 June 2013 The need for lifelong learning and to connect with others in order to secure a better future was the message to students graduating from the Dubai International Academy. The academy’s fifth cohort of 105 students from 29 different countries graduated on Thursday evening at the American University of Dubai auditorium. The fact students had received more than 300 admissions across 16 countries, and 11 scholarships, showed the quality of their education and their potential — but he encouraged them not to forget their “base” and that they had come from Dubai. “Take the way of life, the way of being in this incredible city everywhere you go. It’s very rare anywhere on earth any student or individual will be able to live, play, learn and create friendships in an environment with over 200 nationalities interacting so positively.” He encouraged them to be “proof” to the rest of the world that they came from such a place where different religions, languages, and cultures could coexist in harmony. The future of the world depended on what they did, and they should never stop challenging things, or learning, he said. “The environment changes every second of the day so your knowledge (becomes) null and void… (but) if you challenge and learn all the time you will be unstoppable.” American University of Dubai president Dr Lance de Masi also told students continuous learning was more important than ever now. The 21 st century had gone “topsy-turvy”, but one thing was certain: “human destiny depends on education”. Half of what students learnt today would no longer be true in 20 years, and at least half of what they would know in 20 years had not yet been discovered. However, just as a car was nothing without petrol, knowledge was nothing without character — and without a conciousness of something bigger than each individual, he reminded them. “Each time you share with your fellow man a specific strength you possess, you build a sense of community necessary to keep the planet turning…without connectedness, globalisation is a sham.” He encouraged the students not to be afraid of their potential, but to “live from the inside out, keep learning, look every fellow man in the face, and use your education to serve this world well”. This was the first year students had been admitted to Princeton in the US, and Cambridge in the UK, and also the first year in which two females — Xanita Saayman, 17, and Sana Rizvi, 18 — had been made valedictorian. Both passionate about the sciences, Saayman will be studying biochemistry in Canada next year, with the aim of moving into pharmaceutical or genetic research, while Rizvi will be studying medicine in the United Kingdom. Saayman said most of their cohort would study overseas, mainly in the US and Canada. The academy had prepared them well for independent study, and while they would miss the city they had lived in for four years, they were looking forward to what changes the future held, she said. sarah@khaleejtimes.com Continue reading
Dubai outlets to stub out cigarette sale today
Dubai outlets to stub out cigarette sale today Sajila Saseendran / 31 May 2013 The sale of an estimated 42,000 cigarette packets will be halted in Dubai today as 420 outlets will refrain from selling cigarettes for 24 hours to observe World No Tobacco Day. A total of 34 groups of companies with branches across the emirates are voluntarily taking part in the Dubai Municipality initiative of stopping the sale of cigarettes for a day voluntarily. The civic body’s Public Health and Safety Department had started the day-long anti-tobacco drive in 2010. Over the years, the number of participating outlets has multiplied. “There are two main objectives for the initiative. Firstly, this is part of our World No Tobacco Day celebration with the World Health Organisation which focuses on sending a message to the youngsters to quit smoking… Secondly, it gives an opportunity for the retail sector to take voluntary action in support of public health,” Director of the Department Redha Hassan Salman, who initiated the voluntary drive, told Khaleej Times. Bag your art
Bag your art Staff Reporter (news@khaleejtimes.com) / 30 May 2013 Fancy a painting to match your handbag? A new exhibition, claiming to be the first-of-its-kind in Dubai to showcase art-as-fashion, is opening next month. Pro Art Gallery will be showcasing the collaboration of the works of Hong Kong-based handbag designer, Piecco Pang (PP4E) and New York-based painter Antoinette Wysocki for a month, kick-starting June 5. The exhibition, entitled ‘Full Spectrum’, will present and sell paintings and handbags of the same print. Pang first met Wysocki at her art opening in Hong Kong, where they formed a strong creative connection, and decided to collaborate on a series of limited edition handbags, designed by Pang and featuring abstract paintings by Wysocki, which combines their passion for fashion, function and art. Curator Nabil Sammer said this was something new for Dubai art and fashion fans and collectors to see. “It is happening more and more around the world (but) it’s something that hasn’t been done before here, so it’s special to see. “(And) fashion here in Dubai interests a lot of people. It’s also interesting to see the fashion and artwork of other regions coming here.” The paintings and bags were intended to be sold together, he said. There are about 25 paintings and bags on display, with prices ranging from Dh25,000 to Dh60,000. Each bag is signed by both artists. Gallery owner and founder Tatiana Faure said this was the first time the gallery, based in Jumeriah’s Palm Strip Shopping Mall on Beach Road, had showcased such a combination of not only great artists, but two diverse art forms. “The collections are set to make a huge mark in the art world in the UAE and we foresee a tremendous amount of interest in this unique exhibition,” Faure said. The collection represented a growing trend around the world, of collaborations between luxury firms and artists such as the corporate Vuitton/Yayoi Kusama collaboration a few months ago, she said. “Art has even inspired Art fashion: Yves Saint Laurent had that Mondrian Collection, Elsa Schiaparelli worked with Salvador Dali.… Everybody remembers the Vuitton/Takashi Murakami collaboration.” Wysocki is an expressionistic painter who employs mixed media on organic materials, including canvas and rag. She has shown internationally, including in London, Hong Kong and New York. She works with multiple layers, beginning with gestures and washes and moving to controlled brush strokes with more detail. Meanwhile, self-proclaimed perfectionist Pang began designing and creating clutch bags for a close group of personal friends while working as a private banker. He has now become one of Hong Kong’s top bespoke clutch designers, and sells his bags in Paris, London, Milan, Berlin and Dubai Mall. Continue reading
