How Innovation Is Stimulating Agriculture In Africa

Communities in several African countries are battling food security, as many are not producing enough crops and grain to feed themselves, let alone to sell as surplus. Analysts believe that the effects of unemployment and the resulting increased crime rates can be halted by innovative agricultural solutions that include commercialising crop and livestock production. The New Harvest: Agricultural Innovation in Africa, written by Calestous Juma, examines these topics. The book suggests that Africa currently faces three major opportunities that can transform agriculture on the continent into a force for economic growth. These are: advances in science and technology; the creation of regional markets; and the emergence of a new crop of entrepreneurial leaders dedicated to the continent’s economic improvement. Furthermore, the book asserts that Africa is quite capable of feeding itself. In South Africa, Nedbank is promoting and rewarding agricultural best practice and innovation. The bank has invested around R8.3 million (approximately $1 million) in conservation group WWF South Africa’s Sustainable Agriculture Programme, an initiative that tackles food security challenges and protects natural resources through sustainable and innovative measures. “If our country [South Africa] is going to overcome the significant environmental, social and economic challenges involved in feeding our population at this time, it is the responsibility of every one of us to start thinking and acting more sustainably right now,” said John Hudson, a Nedbank Agriculture official. In Kenya, the recently established Kenya Climate Innovation Centre (KCIC) is expected to revitalise and boost home-grown green technologies throughout the East African region. The KCIC, set up by the World Bank Group’s infoDev Climate Technology Programme, offers support to climate-focused technology ventures in order to boost agricultural productivity and agro-processing. Robert Van Wyk, a South African agricultural research expert, said: “Farmers today are operating in an increasingly uncertain environment in which climate change is affecting future planning and productivity. The KCIC will help farmers cope with climate change and give them relevant information useful to their planning. It will also equip them with technology and knowhow to counter the effects of climate change.” Jonathan Coony, coordinator for the infoDev Climate Technology Programme, said companies supported by the KCIC will have access to funding, business advice, market research and facilities for the design and development of products. This is expected to help give the companies, including those in farming and other agricultural support sectors, opportunities to make themselves more attractive to investors. Other climate innovation centres have been planned for Ethiopia and South Africa. In rural Zimbabwe, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has implemented an electronic voucher (e-voucher) system to help cash strapped small-scale farmers access agricultural inputs. Inputs can be loosely defined as those goods put into a system or expended in an operation to achieve an output. In agriculture, inputs include water, fertilisers, pesticides, fuel and equipment, to name but a few. Ngoni Masoka, the Permanent Secretary in the Zimbabwean Ministry of Agriculture, says: “The use of the vouchers will ensure that rural agro-dealers are revitalised and will lead to an improved organisation of the markets, which will benefit farmers as they access inputs close to their areas.” The e-voucher system is designed to improve the food security situation among vulnerable households through crop and livestock production. It is also hoped that the programme will resuscitate the fragile rural agricultural input supply chain in Zimbabwe, through the re-engagement of markets, the provision of subsidised inputs, and farmers’ timely access to their required inputs. Inputs already accessible through the system include a variety of seeds, fertilisers, lime, agrochemicals and implements, as well as spare parts for farming equipment. Development-focused entrepreneurs and organisations are looking beyond just the accessing of inputs and equipment. Martin Fisher is the co-founder and CEO of KickStart, a non-profit organisation specialising in irrigation technology targeted at improving crop productivity in sub-Saharan Africa. KickStart sells portable pumps, such as the MoneyMaker Hip Pump and the Super MoneyMaker Pump, costing between $35 and $95, to smallholding farmers in Mali, Tanzania and Kenya. Numerous farmers in Malawi, Rwanda, Sudan, Uganda and Zambia have already started using the lowcost pumps for irrigation purposes. Fisher says his organisation sells the pumps instead of giving them away because this promotes entrepreneurship instead of dependence, and ensures that the people who really want the pumps get them. Further north, in Nigeria, mobile phone technology is proving invaluable to innovation and development. Here, mobile technology is being put to excellent use though an initiative called the ‘Growth Enhancement Support Scheme’. Through this, farmers receive fertiliser and seed support through their mobile phones, or ‘electronic wallets’. Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is optimistic that this development will see Nigeria’s agricultural sector become tech-friendly and will work towards decreasing the challenges farmers face because of delays in accessing critical information. Nigeria is the first country in Africa to reach farmers by such means. According to Akinwumi Adesina, Nigerian Minister of Agriculture, by 2013 Nigeria aims to have distributed 10 million mobile phones to farmers across the country, making it easier for them to gain access to inputs. Mobile phones are also assisting farmers in Kenya, by bringing market-related produce prices to their attention. The Kenyan Agricultural Commodities Exchange has partnered with mobile operator, Safaricom, in launching SokoniSMS64, a text messaging platform that provides pricing information to farmers. M-Farm offers a similar service. Mobile app, iCow , billed as “the world’s first mobile phone cow calendar,” allows dairy farmers to track the gestation periods and progress of their cows. It makes use of SMS and voice services to do so. Weather apps such as FarmSupport, accessed through the Internet and mobile phones, are helping farmers across the continent by providing up-to-date weather forecasting. The app also collects crowd-sourced information from farmers on which crops they planted where, and their yields, as well as the types and amounts of fertiliser used. The crowd-source feature uses a modified Geo-Wiki, promoting two-way communication between data providers and farmers. This data is then collated by researchers and could lead to the development of more accurate early warning systems for food security and to better estimates of the current yield gaps in Africa. Innovation in agriculture will indeed go a long way to boosting productivity, creating employment and bettering food security on the continent. Agricultural research scientists need to establish stronger linkages and share ideas and expertise to better tackle challenges impeding the growth of Africa’s agricultural sector. On The Perfume Trail

Although times have changed and new brands have entered the market, the distinctive Arab tradition of wearing aromatic oils and perfumes have shown no signs of fading. By Sakshi Vashist When Shakespeare’s Lady Macbeth, looked at her bloodied hands and cried that all the perfumes of Arabia could not sweeten them, perhaps she too knew that the scent of rose, jasmine and amber have the mystical power to wash away almost anything. Perfumery, or the art of making perfumes, began in ancient Egypt but was developed and further refined by the Romans, the Persians and the Arabs. It’s an Arab tradition to use aromatic oils as a base for perfumes, called attar. The word ‘attar’, ‘ittar’ or ‘othr’ is basically an Arabic word which means ‘scent’, derived from the Persian word ‘Atr’, meaning ‘fragrance’. A 9th century Abbasid scientist, Abu Yusuf Yaqub bin Ishaaq al-Kindi, is considered the founder of the Arabic perfume industry. Ittars, long been considered one of the most treasured of material possessions, are popular not only in Qatar, but throughout the Middle East. These natural perfumes are affordable because they are so concentrated that a small bottle will last for several weeks, if not months. For the same reason, they are usually offered for sale in small quantities, traditionally in decorated crystal cut type bottles or small jewelled decanters. Due to the purity and the nature of oils, there is very little chance of spoilage. Additionally, since these perfumes are highly concentrated, a small drop makes the aroma last the whole day. It is also amazing how the aroma’s intensity changes with the changes of body temperature. Their peculiarity is that they are made only from natural ingredients and doesn’t contain any alcohol. Perfumes are very powerful agent in our social life. Therefore, it becomes important to choose the right perfume. To begin with, there is whole lot of variety available and secondly, you need to consider how it makes you feel. These Arabic fragrances are unique and there is bound to be one that will appeal to your senses. Jo Malone, a popular perfume outlet in Villaggio Mall, offers a variety of ouds and ittars. The ageing period can last from one to 10 years depending on the botanicals used and the results desired. Frankincense, an aromatic resin, is also a key ingredient in making Arabic perfumes. The common fragrance for men is Dhan al Ward or rose flower oil. In the Middle-East, cultivation of this damask rose, a 30-petalled flower, takes place in the Valley of Taif in Saudi Arabia, which is used in the finest Arabian perfumes for men. Exports of flowers from Egypt form the base of many of these. There are some other natural sources that are commonly used to make Arabic perfumes. The first is oud. Oud is naturally fragranced wood that can be used on the skin or burnt to let the smoke spread a smell in the house or on your clothes. It originates from the Aquilaria trees found in India and Southeast Asia. The wood found inside these trees gets a particular mould which gives it a unique fragrance. The initial scent of oud is quite strong but over time it becomes more subtle and is quite lasting. Then there is bukhoor which are pieces of wood chips called agarwood which have been scented with fragrant oils. The smell of bukhoor signifies special occasions like weddings, and its fragrance helps to create feelings of wellbeing in social gatherings or in homes. Both oud and bukhoor leave a distinctive smell not only in homes but also in shopping malls and souks. These incense and fragrant herbs burnt for fragrance are very popular in the country. Perfumers choose two to three kinds of ingredients from more than a hundred flower oils and spices. Like ancient times, many perfumes are still blended by hand. There is an ancient Egyptian method of crushing the flower petals in wooden pressing machines to extract oil which is blended with spices. Manufacturing, nowadays, is also done in fully automated mechanised units where, after selection of the essential oils, the perfumes are filled and bottled and packaged by machines, to cater to the growing international demand. Based on their manufacture Arabic perfumes can be classified as follows: Floral: Manufactured from single species of flower are under this category like gulab, kewra, motia, gulhina, chameli and kadam. Herbal: Manufactured from combination of flowers, herbs and spices like hina and its various forms viz. shamama, shamam-tu-amber, musk amber and musk hina. They can also be classified based on their effect on human body: Warm: Ittars such as musk, amber, kesar (saffron), and oud are used in winters, they increase the body temperature. Cool: Like rose, jasmine, khus, kewda and mogra are used in summers and are cooling for the body. The composition of a perfume is called “accord”, and describes the three set of “notes” that appear gradually on top of each other, thus creating an olfactive harmony. Top notes (head) The compounds that make up the top notes are usually sharp and volatile. When you spray the perfume on, you get the impression of these notes first. This note will last for about 10-20 minutes before they evaporate. Middle notes (heart) These scents appear just before the top notes fade and are usually rounded and soft. Rose, jasmine and lily scents are typical middle notes. The “heart”, in combination with the base notes, gives the perfume its main character. The middle notes usually appear a few minutes after application and will last about three-six hours on the skin. Base notes (drydown) These scents are heavy and large molecules that evaporate slowly. They emerge late in fragrant compositions and have a rich and deep character. They are also used to give lasting power to the perfume. You will probably detect the first base notes between half an hour to an hour after initial spray, and they can last up to 24 hours on the skin. Having paid a scantily-clad visit to Greece with their last fragrance Eros , the brand has now landed in the Orient with the release of Oud Noir. In contrast to the bright turquoise used for Eros , the sharp-cornered smoked glass bottle is unusually understated, with only a small gold Medusa logo front and centre to keep the label heads happy. However, it reflects a whole new approach for the label – this is Versace manning up.
